James Gunn opens up a little on what’s next for Lex Luthor in Man of Tomorrow, plus the DCU Batman casting process in a recent interview. Gunn spoke with The Ringer-Verse and teased what he’s excited for when it comes to Lex Luthor in his upcoming Man of Tomorrow film.
“I think I’m just more interested in getting into the heart of Lex and seeing how he fits into all of this. I think getting to know more of Lex as a human being. We saw a lot about the evil part of Lex. He’s pretty evil. He, as a character, is really interesting. There’s something, despite everything, that is incredibly heroic about Lex.”
“Take aside morality, which is hard to do, but here is this guy who is saying, ‘You can hold up a building. You can shoot down planes with your eyes. F*** you, I’m going to kick your ass because I’m better than you. I can’t help but admire his tenacity and his ego. His ambition is beyond compare. He’s the underdog.”
“Yeah, sure, he’s got a lot of corporate power that he can use to manipulate things, but he can’t fly into outer space, lift up a building, or punch something across three states. He’s a guy, and I f***ing love that.”
He also added that superman is more “is more comic booky in some ways,” than Man of Tomorrow will be.

Gunn also commented on the ongoing DCU Batman casting speculation, but he’s giving nothing away, because the process hasn’t begun yet.
“Do I have ideas about actors who could play Batman? Absolutely, I do. I have guys I like. I have guys that are top of the list for me, just like I had people that were at the top of the list for Superman.”
“People can guess and maybe they’ll be right about certain things. We’d have to screen test, we’d have to do the whole thing.”
The channel suggested some of the fan casting including that of Brandon Sklenar. Gunn obviously knew where they were going with the 1923 talk.
“Okay, I see what you’re doing. 1923, it’s a really good TV show, like I can’t believe how good that show was.”
Later on, Gunn seemed to rule out one actor who had been pushing for the role in the DCU,
“One actor in particular, a pretty big star, wants to be Batman. We’ve talked about it, but I don’t think that’s the case.” Probably Alan Ritchson ( Reacher) who pushed himself forward and then kinda walked it back after meeting with Gunn.
The key point though,
“The script isn’t done. I mean, we’ve got somebody writing a script, I think it’s really good.”
So until that scripty is finalised, we won’t be getting a casting process for the DCU Batman. It is coming eventually though, and for sure Gunn has a few actors in mind.
