James Gunn says he originally wanted Dave Bautista for Peacemaker role, plus what he thinks is his best casting choice yet. Speaking with Howard Stern recently, recently, Gunn got into just where the idea for Peacemaker came from.
“It was Dave Bautista. He’s a good friend of mine,” the filmmaker shared. “Obviously, he plays Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy, and I wrote the character of Peacemaker for him, and we offered him the role, but he was offered two movies, and we weren’t paying him a lot, and so he had to go where the money was.”
Of course in the end it was John Cena who got the role and Gunn has absolutley no regrets. Honestly, I’m not sure Bautista was right for Peacemaker and Cena is perfect. In other words, for me it worked out for the better. Now we can have Bautista come in somewhere else in the DCU.

Gunn also talked to Stern about casting Milly Alcock in Superman before hiring Gillespie as director of Supergirl,
“Might be the best bit of casting I’ve ever done in my entire life. She is absolutely stunning in the movie.”
We did only get Alcock for a one small scene in Superman. Ergo, I get the feeling Gunn wanted to get Alcock locked down asap for this Supergirl script
Joining Alcock in Supergirl are Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Jason Momoa as Lobo, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, and Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze. As mentioned above, Craig Gillespie directs (from a script by Ana Nogueira.)
Supergirl arrives in theatres on June 26, 2026. Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 4 premieres this week wherever you watch it.
