In a recent interview writer/director James Mangold opens up about plans for his ‘Dawn of the Jedi’ era Star Wars movie. Mangold is doing the rounds to promote his new Bob Dylan biopic and thus spoke to MovieWeb. The outlet asked Mangold about the Star Wars movie he’s developing.

“To me, the really important aspects are the freedom to make something new. Beau Willimon and I, in relation to Star Wars, have been working on a script, and we’ll see what happens. Do we find a way on the page to say something original?”

“The Star Wars movie would be taking place 25,000 years before any known Star Wars movies takes place. It’s an area and a playground that I’ve always [wanted to explore] and that I was inspired by as a teenager.”

“I’m not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it’s almost immovable, and you can’t please anybody.”

Of course, it remains to be seen what expectations fans will have. This is still a step, albeit a first one, into a Universe that has rules and a certain level of technology. Luckily for Mangold the Star Wars Universe is very old and technology sort of stagnated. Ergo, 25k years earlier there were probably still blasters and starships. That’s around when the hyperspace lanes were first explored going by old Legends lore.

However, he also has the Force to deal with, and therefore it needs to fit with how the Jedi evolved, peaked and ultimately faded due to their dogmatic beliefs.

As always, I’ll believe this movie is happening when the cameras begin rolling. Lucasfilm does not have a good hit rate at all from announcements to releases. I’m also not super excited because I’ve never been a huge fan of Mangold. He arguably made the worst Indiana Jones film for me, at least the most boring. I’m also not salivating over Logan like a lot in the geek community do.

What do you think as James Mangold opens up about his ‘Dawn of the Jedi’ era Star Wars movie? Are you excited for this one, do you think it will actually get made? Thoughts below as always.
