Joseph Kosinski’s Miami Vice Reboot Set For August 2027 Release

Miami Vice was one of my favorite television shows growing up. Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas embodied a cool factor by tackling the Gold Coast underworld while looking good doing it. More than just a police procedural, the mix of fashion, MTV visuals, and Michael Mann’s signature storytelling made Miami Vice a definite part of ‘80s pop culture.

Now, F1 and Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski plans to recapture the magic of the beloved NBC cop show with Universal announcing an August 6, 2027, release date for the big screen reboot. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Kosinski’s take on the property “will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-’80s Miami in a new version of Miami Vice, inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.” Additionally, Vice will be shot in IMAX just like Kosinski’s previous blockbuster hits.

News of an ”80s-appropriate period setting should be a blessing for longtime fans of the series. Vice executive producer Mann had previously directed a big-screen version of the series in 2006. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx were cast as the iconic duo of Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs in a gritty modern setting. Despite some appraisal over the years, the Mann film proved more infamous for its behind-the-scenes struggles as well as stripping away the series’ signature traits, such as the Jan Hammer theme song.

Going back to the ‘80s could likely bring back the human element that was missing from the 2006 adaptation. That movie was more undercover-focused than character-driven. Early episodes of the series that featured the likes of Bruce Willis and Ed O’Neill before they were stars have rich stories worth revisiting. With Kosinski involved, he will add to the fun because he recaptured the visual style of Top Gun in the 2022 hit sequel.

The Batman’s Dylan Clark produces Miami Vice with Kosinski, with a screenplay by Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer. Casting is reportedly underway, and the speculation is rampant on who could fill the shoes of Johnson and Thomas. It’s unknown if the original stars will cameo. Based on THR’s reporting, it looks as if Mann is hands off the project.
