Kevin Feige calls Cumberbatch the anchor of the MCU. Feige’s comments came at Benedict Cumberbatch’s Walk of Fame Ceremony in Hollywood yesterday. The star who first portrayed the MCU’s Doctor Strange in 2016 was given his famous star, and who better to talk about Cumberbatch than now long time collaborator Kevin Feige. As Feige pointed out, Cumberbatch has appeared in three of the top 6 grossing movies of all time already in his time in the MCU. Of course Cumberbatch is also famous for much more than his MCU movies as the star is always working. In fact that’s something that Feige jokes causes his team a lot of headaches for scheduling.
You can watch the full video if you like from Variety, but it does go on a bit. If you just want the pertinent quote, here it is.
“I remember our very first meeting was set up as a general, and we wanted to pitch him this great character, and before we could, he said ‘So tell me about Doctor Strange,’ because you knew. Because somewhere you knew what this could be and you’ve always seen the tremendous potential in this character. Because of that, you’ve become the anchor of the MCU and the only actor capable of guiding us through the madness of the Multiverse.”
Not one to miss a small chance at promotion there Mr. Feige. It just so happens the next big movie from Marvel Studios is? The Cumberbatch led Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

So has Doctor Strange become the anchor of the MCU? Some would say that was a role previously held by Tony Stark. However for me it was never just Tony, it was Tony and Cap who were the pillars of the MCU. Likewise as we move beyond Rogers and Stark, I’d say Strange is one of the pillars being constructed for the next phase of the MCU. At this stage though, who else will join him as a current pillar of the MCU? Perhaps that remains to be seen as we are in the early days of this new MCU era. One could certainly make an argument that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has become as, if not more important than Cumberbatch’s Strange. However until a new deal is agreed between Marvel and Sony, Feige cannot simply do what we wants with Holland’s character.
