Since the release of Venom in 2018, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has been a mixed bag. While Tom Hardy’s symbiote anti-hero has overcome the critics, other potential franchise starters such as Morbius and Madame Web failed to launch. Now, the R-rated Kraven the Hunter could well be the cinematic universe’s last chance to impress moviegoers.
Kraven’s director J.C. Chandor spoke with ComicBook.com to address why the poor reception of the previous films. He goes on to explain why the shortcomings of Sony’s output should not stop the fans from buying a ticket to support the Aaron Taylor-Johnson vehicle:
“I don’t want to get too into the nitty-gritty of it, but here’s what I would say: for me as a filmmaker, my number one goal, especially, quite frankly, over the last couple of years where you guys are deep in this world … some of the fans out there, a lot of the fans, were upset with certain decisions and certain outcomes [of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe].”
“Then with other films, they’ve gone on to be tremendous successes. So there’s been there’s been a mixed success rate. People have got to give us a chance and come out and support this film, and literally try to wash away some of the other stuff that’s happened. Give our film a chance.”
The famous game-hunting Spider-Man supervillain was discussed as a central antagonist prior to his big screen debut. His signature spear was teased in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the game hunter was almost added to Spider-Man: No Way Home in its early development. Chandor goes on to express his intention to keep Kraven a stand-alone story without the usual setups for a bigger cinematic event.

“And I think they’ll realize that we’ve done everything we can to give them a pretty fun story. You’ll see when the movie’s over, there’s potential for a lot of things to happen. But my goal was to isolate our movie, protect it, and just tell a good damn story. And then we’ll have opportunities to do a lot of fun things.”
Will audiences support Kraven at this late stage? The film has seen its release schedule move three times since the initial January 13, 2023 date. Additionally, Box-Office Pro has the movie tracking for a U.S. weekend opening of $20-$25 million. That is half of the opening weekend for Venom: The Last Dance, the lowest-grossing entry in the series.
