After years of directing in the horror genre with Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring, director James Wan is back with a new original horror film that’ll scare the bejeebers out of you and perhaps a start of another frightening franchise with Malignant.
For this story, a woman named Madison is haunted with shocking visions of grisly murders. As her torment worsens, she wakes up realizing her dreams are witnessing the realities of something sinister.
Malignant stars Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle, The Mummy), Maddie Hasson (YouTube’s Impulse, Mr. Mercedes), George Young (Containment), Michole Briana White (Black Mafia Family, Dead to Me), Jacqueline McKenzie (Palm Beach, Reckoning), Jake Abel (Supernatural), and Ingrid Bisu (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Nun).
Wan directed the film from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (M3GAN, The Nun 2) from the original story by Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Cooper. Also, Wan assembled his frequent collaborators, including the director of photography Don Burgess and editor Kirk Morri (Aquaman, The Conjuring 2), production designer Desma Murphy (Aquaman, Furious 7), and the costume designer Lisa Norcia (Insidious: The Last Key). The music is provided by Joseph Bishara, who composed the score for all seven movies in The Conjuring universe.

It’s terrific to have Jams Wan back in the horror genre since The Conjuring 2 in 2016. Although, I do love his action sequences with Furious 7 and comic book nostalgia in Aquaman, Wan’s biggest strengths are intense scares and horrific storylines that’ll make you cringe and talk after the movies.
Can’t wait to see what Malignant will offer as it’s slated for theatrical release on September 10 and for HBO Max subscribers on the same day.
