Mando Will Stay Tonally Less Mature Than Andor Says Jon Favreau

If anyone was wondering, Mando will stay tonally less mature than Andor says creator Jon Favreau. The Mandalorian Season 3 just dropped last week. It would be fair to say that after the absolute masterclass we got in Andor, expectations were high. However, so far Mando has never quite went to the mature themes presented in Andor. Far as Favreau is concerned, that will remain the case.

Speaking with Film Stories Favreau indicated that whilst there is a place for Andor, there is also a place for more family oriented content.

“I think we have fun with it and we know that Star Wars has to be fun. It has to be hopeful. It also has to be accessible to the next generation, because that’s what it was when we engaged with it. So that’s a litmus test.”

“It’s not that it always has to always be like that.  I really enjoyed Andor quite a bit, I thought they did a great job, and I think Rogue One also had a tonal thing that feels more mature but still feels like Star Wars. However for our purposes, and with having a puppet as one of our leads, it has to feel a little bit more geared towards all ages.”

“We’d like to have many generations watch together, parents and children. Therefore we have to map out where we think all of this is going bearing all of that in mind. However we also have to be flexible as things reveal themselves logically, as we learn from what we’re cutting it together, and – to some extent – how it’s embraced or not and how people feel about it.”

“Television has a back-and-forth that shapes the journey, and that’s part of the fun of it.”

For me Mando has always straddled that balance well. There are some dark moment and some light moments, but it never feels cartoony. That being said, check out our review of Mando S3E1 and cartoony is exactly what Kyle thought when those pirates were introduced. Let’s hope episode 2 swings back a bit darker to balance things out.

I loved Andor, loved it. However sadly I realize that it wasn’t for all Star Wars fans and there will always be a portion of the fanbase who prefers The Bad Batch. Hopefully Mando will continue to be the show we all love no matter what our tastes are?

So, Mando will stay tonally less mature than Andor says creator Jon Favreau. To be honest I would have expected nothing else. However, just don’t go full The Book of Boba Fett please, because that was a bridge too far at times for me, in what should have been a more mature themed show. What do you think of Favreau’s comments? Leave your thoughts below as always.
