Marvel To Hear Pitches For X-Men Movie Plus Some Barside Buzz Says No Wolverine At First

Jordan Peele met with Marvel about X-Men, but it's not happening yet, plus more on Shawn Levy and Avengers 5.

According to Deadline, Marvel are set to hear pitches for an MCU X-Men movie soon, plus some Barside Buzz that there will be no Wolverine at first in the team. Let’s start with the trade news as Deadline reports the following news regarding the MCU’s X-Men movie.

‘With a deal in place with the Writers Guild, studios have begun taking aim at setting writers for their open assignments. Marvel Studios is looking to set the bar with what will likely become one of the more sought-after jobs for any scribe.’

‘Sources tell Deadline that Marvel will start setting writer meetings later this fall for pitches on its anticipated X-Men movie. Insiders add there is no rush to fill the job since the film hasn’t been dated yet, and it’s more than likely that writer decision will be made at the top of 2024. Marvel declined comment.’

In one way this makes sense. However, as the trade says, I doubt this is a top priority to nail right now. As far as we can tell, there will be no X-Men movie until after Avengers: Secret Wars. At this point whilst unofficial, most in the industry believe Secret Wars won’t release until 2028.

Closer to 5 actually, but it’s a moot point. At the same time even if Marvel meets with writers and they choose someone as their preferred pitch, it does not mean they will 100% write the movie. Marvel have done this many times in the past and then brought in different writers to take that concept and make it work, or add in some studio mandated elements. How many articles have I actually written where we get a writer change before filming with Marvel. It’s never been a criticism, just a factual point worth making.

As for the rumor side, the insider CWGST, who posted above, also says there will be no Wolverine in that initial team.

Actually this could make a lot of sense for Marvel, especially if they start with a solo Logan story. However with an ensemble cast, the person playing Wolverine is always going to be seen as the lead and yet Wolverine isn’t the lead of X-Men, he’s just one of the team. Ergo, it may work to have the first X-Men movie be set before Logan joined the team.

My skepticism would come from the fact Marvel are still to hear pitches for X-Men. Therefore, how can Toast know there are no plans to have Wolverine involved? What if they’re favorite pitch has Wolverine featured prominently? I mean I guess they could brief the writers not to include Wolverine right at the start. However, it still feels too early for me to be convinced they already have the team mapped out.

I guess we will find out. It was inevitable as Thanos that X-Men were coming to the MCU. But I’m also one that’s of the opinion it won’t happen till the Multiverse Saga is concluded. In the meantime, especially within Deadpool 3, the Fox actors are the MCU version of the X-Men.

What do you think as Marvel are set to hear pitches for an MCU X-Men movie soon? What about the Barside Buzz that there will be no Wolverine at first? Thoughts below as always.
