Adam Elliot enjoys telling stories of ill luck and tragedies but insists they end happily. In the stop-motion animated film Memoir of a Snail, one young girl retells her stories of one tragedy to the next with her only relief from her snail collection.

The voice cast includes Sarah Snook, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Eric Bana, Magda Szubanski, Dominique Pinon, Tony Armstrong, Paul Capsis, Bernie Clifford, Davey Thompson, Charlotte Belsey, Mason Litsos, Nick Cave, and Jacki Weaver.

Here is the official synopsis:

Grace Pudel is a lonely misfit with an affinity for collecting ornamental snails and an intense love for books. At a young age, when Grace is separated from her twin brother Gilbert, she falls into a spiral anxiety and anger. Despite a continued series of hardships, inspiration and hope emerge when she strikes up an enduring with an elderly eccentric woman named Pinky, who is full of grit and lust for life. From Academy Ward-winning animation writer and director Adam Elliot, Memoir of a Snail is a poignant, heartfelt, hilarious chronicle of a life of an outsider finding her confidence and silver linings amongst the clutter of everyday life.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta chatted with Adam Elliot about his storytelling techniques, stop-motion animation, and obviously—snails.

Adam Elliot is an Australian filmmaker who loosely based his stories on his family and claymation, which he deems “Clayography.” He started with a 1996 short film, Uncle, which he created while attending the Victorian College of the Arts under the tutelage of Sarah Watt. Two years later, the Australian Film Commission funded his second film, Cousin, and then with another short film, Brother, the following year. In 2003, he directed Harvie Krumpet, which was narrated by Geoffrey Rush and later won an Academy Award for Best Short Animation. In 2009, he created his first feature animated film with Mary and Max, which made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Ernie Biscuit was his most recent short film in 2015, which was selected to the Annecy International Animation Festival.

Memoir of a Snail is in theaters on Friday, October 25.
