In a recent interview, Grand Admiral Thrawn actor Lars Mikkelsen comments on the kind of Thrawn we will see in the Ahsoka Star Wars series. Although Thrawn as a character predates even Mikkelsen’s tenure, the actor did play the main antagonist in Star Wars Rebels. Therefore, for many Star Wars fans, Mikkelsen is already the voice of Thrawn. Now in Ahsoka he will also play an older Thrawn in live-action for the first time.
Mikkelsen spoke to EW and began by saying he had zero reservations to playing Thrawn in live-action.
“When David finally asked me if I wanted to do it, there were no doubts. Of course, I wanted to do that, so I’m very excited. But [as far as] the transition between Rebels and the actual live-action character? I hope it works!”
Though Mikkelsen points out this is still the same character he has played before, he also admits it remains a challenge to get it right for live-action.
“In many ways, it’s the same character. He’s based on the same material. But we needed to think: Do this right.”
Mikkelsen says he did not go back and watch old Rebels episodes to help re-familiarize himself with the blue-skinned, red-eyed Chiss also known as Mitth’raw’nuruodo, noting that while it’s the same character, he also “wanted to create something new.”
As for how Mikkelsen See’s Thrawn going into Ahsoka?
“He’s a top strategist,” says Mikkelsen. “He’s always seven paces ahead of anybody else. And ruthless, of course. But only when it’s needed, actually. I think he thrives also with the creativity of the surroundings. I mean, he’s not using people in a bad way. He’s using their creativity to reach his goals.”

Mikkelsen was long rumored to playing Thrawn in live-action, in fact it was us here at LRM that began this rumor, based on what we heard from our sources at Lucasfilm at the time. However, it wasn’t until Star Wars Celebration when Mikkelsen was forst officially revealed and as he says, it was a hugely emotional moment for him.
“It was a very emotional moment that I didn’t expect to have,” Mikkelsen says. “But I think there’s a lot of love to be taken care of from the audience. And I felt enormous gratitude. It was amazing. Never tried anything like that.”
I can’t wait to see Mikkelsen play Thrawn in live-action. We also expect Mikkelsen’s Thrawn to be the main antagonist of Dave Filoni’s upcoming MandoVerse movie.
