The shadowy underground economy is in its fifth season, featured on National Geographic’s Trafficked: Underworlds with Mariana van Zeller.

This Emmy Award-winning series, this season, delves back into the world of cartels, scams, militias, heists, bride trafficking, and even illegal street racing. Last season, the series garnered a record 29 nominations.

Here is the description for the fifth and final season:

The new season kicks off with a groundbreaking look into the operations of Mexican cartels inside the United States. The results are shocking. From small-town drug cells, van Zeller explores how these criminal groups move drugs, launder billions, and even infiltrate law enforcement. It’s a growing influence that’s fueling violence and addiction across the country.

From high-level criminals to frontline victims and government insiders, van Zeller’s reporting offers a 360-degree view of the forces shaping our increasingly interconnected, and blurred, legal and illegal economies. Premiering weekly, the series exposes the human cost of these hidden worlds and why they matter more than ever.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with journalist Mariana van Zeller about her experiences with Trafficked: Underworlds with Mariana van Zeller, the secrets, her life, her courage, and the next chapter of her life.

Mariana van Zeller started her career with Portuguese-based television network SIC. She earned her master’s degree at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She covered the September 11 attacks for SIC Noticias and later made freelance documentaries from Syria that appeared in PBS’s Frontline/World, the CBC, and Channel 4. In 2005, she joined Current TV as a correspondent and producer for the Vanguard documentary series.

Trafficked: Underworlds with Mariana van Zeller is now playing on National Geographic and streaming on Hulu.
