We all remember where we were when Geniegate 2019 happened. Okay, maybe not, but when that recent trailer for the upcoming Disney live-action film Aladdin hit the web a few weeks back, it was BAD. We only caught a glimpse of Will Smith in his horribly-CG blue form, and it launched a thousand memes. In spite of many of our love of the Aladdin animated film, we couldn’t really get behind it.
Luckily, Disney seems to have fast-tracked a new trailer, which hit the web this morning. Granted, I have no evidence that this trailer was actually fast-tracked, but given how small the gap was between trailers, it seems like the studio was working overtime to help change the narrative….and for me, it worked! This trailer is much more in line with what I was hoping for, and the brief glimpses we have of Genie in his blue form look much less uncanny valley this time around.

That being said, if you’re one of those people who thinks these live-action films aren’t taking enough risks in terms of story differences, this won’t convince you. This is very much Beauty and the Beast in terms of its differences between animated and live-action forms. So I’ll probably like it, but I can totally understand if it doesn’t interest some folks.
Below is the official synopsis for Aladdin:
“A thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, Aladdin is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who brings his singular flair for fast-paced, visceral action to the fictitious port city of Agrabah, Aladdin is written by John August and Ritchie based on Disney’s Aladdin. The film stars Will Smith as the Genie; Mena Massoud as Aladdin; Naomi Scott as Jasmine; Marwan Kenzari as Jafar; Navid Negahban as the Sultan; Nasim Pedrad as Dalia and Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders.”
