Nintendo has always been full of surprises. Just when you think they’ll zig, they zag, and when the industry goes in one direction, they take pains to go in the exact opposite one. Last year, they revealed plans for a brand-new Pokémon experience for the Nintendo Switch, and while we were all hopeful it could hit in 2018, 2019 seemed to be the better bit.
Last night, the Big N had a press conference, and in it, they announced a handful of Pokémon titles, three of which are set to hit this year!
First up is Pokémon Quest, which is available for both mobile and the Switch. This new game shows off the characters in blocky, Minecraft-esque forms and comes with an all-new play style. The game is available for download as we speak and is free to start — meaning there are in-app purchases, for better or worse.
The next two games are the big ones for the year and are Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go Eevee! This game is sort of a remake of Pokémon Yellow and allows players to have a companion Pokémon (Pikachu or Eevee) in this adventure through the Kanto region. The game will utilize the Joycon, and Pokémon themselves will be caught using motion controls. Additionally, the game will have connectivity with Pokémon Go in some form or another. Finally, players will have the option to purchase a special Pokéball-shaped Joycon that allows you to take the experience to the next level — and it even allows you to take your companion on walks!
If you’re like me, you were minorly disappointed with this announcement, thinking this was the new direction they were taking the franchise in. Luckily, those waiting for the brand-new core RPG in the franchise, you only have to wait until fall of next year. Actual details for the game are limited, but rest assured, this is the game that fans have been waiting for.
These other games are just great ways to kill time in that day, which I’ll take any day of the week!
