As of late Marvel Studios seems to be throwing fans surprises left and right. Today’s HUGE season finale of Loki has fans all over talking about the implications. Don’t worry, no spoilers here. Also, yesterday out of nowhere we saw Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Taika Waititi’s Korg reacting to the trailer for the upcoming comedy, Free Guy. Last weekend, Marvel Studios also released their first post-pandemic feature film, Black Widow. This film had its own twist/surprise with one of its characters as well.
Black Widow featured the villain Taskmaster. Who in this particular story was being controlled by the evil Dreykov, played by Ray Winstone. While we had seen Taskmaster do a good job at mimicking the fighting styles of the Avengers, we did not get to see who was under the hood until late in the film. While the classic comic book character is a man named Tony Masters, this version had a more personal touch to both Natasha and Dreykov.
It was revealed that Taskmaster was Antonia Dreykov, played by Olga Kurylenko. She is the daughter of Dreykov. Black Widow thought she had been killed as “collateral damage” when she attempted to kill Dreykov so many years back when Antonia was a child. The truth was she had survived and Dreykov had programmed her and turned her into a mindless soldier that had no choice but to obey.
This change in the character really rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. They were left feeling like Taskmaster had been wasted as a “one-off” character, with no kind of real-time on-screen other than a few fight sequences. But being that this is the Black Widow film, not a Taskmaster film, there was no time for further character development.

Personally, I would love to see her character back in the MCU. Struggling to figure out how to deal with the years of trauma that she endured by her captor who was also her father. Also, something else is, what if someone else could figure out how to manipulate her? There are many directions a story about Antonia could go. It would be fantastic if Marvel Studios could take some time and bring her back to Disney+.
With the reveal of Taskmaster’s identity on Black Widow, LRM Online’s Emmanuel Gomez spoke with actress Olga Kurylenko. She talks about the trauma that Antonia has to endure as she is trapped in silence. As well as the metaphors that play out with her character. One very interesting topic was looking ahead to the future. Where would we both want or expect to see the character if Marvel Studios ever brought her back. Check out the full interview down below!
Marvel Studios’ Black Widow is now playing in theaters everywhere. As well as Disney+ with Premier Access.
