PBS KIDS’ City Island S2 | Aaron Augenblick on Making Educational Children’s Series

City Island

Animation producer Aaron Augenblick, renowned for his adult animated series, has also ventured into the realm of educational kids animated series with City Island. His expertise and experience ensure a rewarding viewing experience for children and adults alike.

With season two for City Island underway, the kid’s animation series is set to delve into crucial topics such as news reporting, advertising, and the Internet. These are not just entertaining episodes, but also educational ones, designed to broaden children’s understanding of the world. Additionally, the new season includes two special musical episodes of “Theater Street” and “Holidays, both written by comedian Rachel Wenitsky (The Tonight Show, SNL).

The series’ voice stars are Kimia Behpoornia (Abbott Elementary) and Kimiko Glenn (Orange Is the New Black). This season features notable guest talent, including Rosie Perez, Ali Stroker, Vanessa Bayer, and Rachel Bloom.

Here is the official description of the series:

City Island is a living city where the objects are people. The show centers around civics. Watt the lightbulb helps everyone in town with his big ideas. In the town of City Island, everything is alive! Every object is a fun character with a name, voice, and distinctive personality. Look around the city and see talking lamp posts, mailboxes, cars, and windows. There are no people, the city itself is the populace.

City Island truly is a “living city” rich with iconic businesses, government institutions, and a diverse citizenry. In every episode, either through Watt’s natural curiosity or an unexpected turn of events, Watt discovers a question, problem, or challenge that drives him to find a creative solution. Watt meets all the different members of the community (firefighters, police, mail carriers, construction crews) and learns about how they make the city run. The stories emphasize conflict resolution, cooperation, and city planning. Watt’s adventures teach us all about what it means to be a citizen of the amazing City Island.

In addition to civics, the series touches on other related aspects of the Social Studies framework, such as geography and economics. Overall, the show highlights the benefits of a friendly community, and the fact that great ideas are our most precious resource!
