Not too long ago, the idea of an Aquaman movie would have been a joke. Of course, the comic had plenty of fans, but in terms of mainstream appeal, it wouldn’t have been much of a draw for most people. Of course, that idea was pretty much proven wrong last year when the character hit the silver screen in his own standalone film. It went on to be the highest grossing movie of all time, putting even the likes of Batman and Superman to shame.
The helmer of the flick was Furious 7 director and horror master James Wan, who brought a pretty simple story filled with amazing action scenes and overwhelming world-building to the big screen in a fun package. It may not have been perfect, but most seem to agree that it was at least entertaining to watch. But, as it turns out, Wan wasn’t the first director Warner Bros. had in mind. In fact, Peter Jackson, when speaking to Empire, revealed that he was offered the chance by then-Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara. Twice actually:
“He said, ‘Are you a fan of Aquaman?’ I said, ‘No.’ Six months later: ‘Peter, are you a fan of Aquaman?’ I said, ‘No, Kevin, I already told you this’. I’m not a superhero guy. I read Tintin… Look, films are hard. I only want to make something that I have a deep passion for. I don’t really anticipate making another theatrical film for a year or two.”

Probably a good move from Jackson. Following the exhausting marathon that was The Hobbit, he wisely just doesn’t want to waste time with anything he isn’t 110% into. But how different would this movie had turned out had he directed it? One can only imagine.
