The PlayStation 5 reveal event is upon us.
The next generation of gaming is nearly upon us. Yes, in spite of the clusterf**k that is 2020, console makers are determined to make this year the start of the next cycle. This holiday season, we expect to see the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 launch. As of this writing, we know quite a bit about the Xbox Series X and even know what the thing looks like. On the PlayStation side of things, we know a great deal about its innards but almost nothing about the console itself or its library of games.
Last week was supposed to be the week where Sony brought all speculation to an end. However, in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests across the world, Sony made the wise choice of postponing it. Pushing a presentation touting the future of gaming may have felt the slightest bit tone-deaf to a lot of people, and was probably the right move. But when would they be revealing it? After all, they can’t wait forever, can they?
Fret not, my young console lover. Sony released an announcement on the official PlayStation Twitter account, and in it, they give us a new time and date for the console reveal.

So, when can you expect to see more about the PlayStation 5? This Thursday, June 11 at 1 PM PT is the new day and time for this digital event. As expected, they continue to tout this as “the future of gaming,” and why not? It’s a new console, and with it comes a whole new bevy of tech innovations that help make this generation stand out from the last.

We are expecting to see some legit gameplay footage at this thing, but the press release noted the event will stream at 30 fps. This means we won’t necessarily get to see the lovely 60 fps or more we’re used to seeing games run at. But know this has nothing to do with the quality of the games, and everything to do with the pre-taped stream. They stress that the games will look worlds better when we play them on our PlayStation 5s on a 4K TV. No surprise there.
Sony also encourages us to watch the presentation with headphones, as it has some “cool audio work.”
If nothing else, we’ll finally be able to compare the full strategies of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. No, we still won’t have much a game lineup, but that’ll come with time. And, when all said and done, I know it won’t take long for the fanboys to come out with memes about how one console’s going to murder the other. Oh, wait. They already have.

Meanwhile, the rest of us can all take a step back and appreciate the reality we live in — the reality where both consoles have something to offer. Neither company has our money yet, so why not use this opportunity to wisely assess the pros and cons of each? That’s what I’ll be doing this coming generation. While I’ve fallen squarely in the PS4/Switch camp this generation, different games and business practices can easily change that.
