As an El Salvadorian immigrant and a writer for Saturday Night Live, Julio Torres has an American dream of success in this country. His relationship with struggle and success translated into the fictional narrative film Problemista in his directorial feature film debut.

The film stars Tilda Swinton, Julio Torres, RZA, Greta Lee, Catalina Saavedra, James Scully, Larry Owens, Laith Nakli, Kelly McCormack, Spike Einbinder, Greta Titelman, River L. Ramirez, and narrated by Isabella Rossellini.

Here is the official synopsis:

Alejandro is an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador, struggling to bring his unusual ideas to life in New York City. As time on his work visa runs out, a job assisting an erratic art-world outcast becomes his only hope to stay in the country and realize his dream. From writer/director Julio Torres comes a surreal adventure through the equally treacherous worlds of New York City and the U.S. Immigration system.

Julio Torres is a writer, comedian, and actor known as a writer for Saturday Night Live and co-creator of the HBO series Los Espookys. He started his career writing for The Chris Gethard Show on truTV. He voiced in several animated comedies, including Bob’s Burgers and The Great North. He appeared in Shrill, Search Party, and many late-night talk shows.

Problemista is currently playing in theaters.
