Okay…okay, then. Looks like the early-2000s are starting to make a comeback. A new report from TheWrap states that a Legally Blonde 3 is in the works, and that star Reese Witherspoon is in talks to join the project. Of course, getting Witherspoon back is a huge, she isn’t the only important component of this film.
The outlet states that Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah Lutz are both also in talks to write the script for the film. This is important since these were the two who adapted that original novel for the first film. As you’ll recall, that second film, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde, was a Grade A stinker, and getting these two back after leaving them for that first sequel is a good move.
As of right now, MGM has no idea who will be directing this threequel, and in terms of plot, there are still no details (as I would imagine, what with the screenwriters not being hired yet).
The first film hit theaters back in 2001 and managed to surprise audiences, bringing in $141.8 million at the box office, which, for back then, was pretty good for mid-budget comedy film ($18 million). The film spawned the aforementioned awful sequel, as well as a musical, and a direct-to-DVD spin-off, Legally Blondes.
What do you think of Legally Blonde getting a third film? Can you imagine the character of Elle Woods being up to anything particularly interesting all these years later? Let us know your thoughts down below!
