Robbie Coltrane, the beloved star of such franchises as Harry Potter and James Bond, has passed away at the age of 72, according to his agent. He passed away at a hospital near his home in Larbert, Scotland. The award-winning actor is said to have been ill for the past two years. He is survived by two children.
He is best know by this generation as the memorable Hogwarts gamekeeper, Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter series starting in 2001. His heartwarming performance as the half-giant/half-wizard made him one of the most popular characters in the series. Who can ever forget the line, “yer a wizard Harry”. He developed quite the onscreen chemistry with the three stars of the franchise that included Daniel Radcliff, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. He had been at the top of J.K. Rowling’s list to play Hagrid.
Across the pond, as some would say, Coltrane was also a television star as the forensic psychologist Dr. Edward “Fitz” Coltrane in the award-winning murder drama series, Cracker. The series had critical success. He won three consecutive BAFTA awards for best actor for that role and receive other nominations for his work in the series National Treasure and Tutti Frutti. He also played the Pope in the 1991 comedy, The Pope Must Die.

In the secret agent world of 007, Coltrane starred alongside Pierce Brosnan as Valentine Dmitrocvich Zukovsky, a former KGB operative that became an ally to James Bond. He was in two films, GoldenEye and The World is Not Enough.
Coltrane’s memory will live on with his family and fans through his great roles in film and television. It had given me such joy to see him in the recent Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special that was on HBO Max during the winter of 2021.
