This weekend is the release of filmmaker Adrian Bonvento’s thrilling documentary, Rookie Season. It follows a businessman and amateur racer that purchased the assets of Rebel Rock Racing in 2018 with the goal of seeing if he could make it in the ranks of professional racing. Bonvento was given unprecedented access to the team and was able to capture the ups and downs of their journey. It’s important to note that all of his footage was captured entirely independent of broadcast cameras.
Rookie Season is the directorial debut of Bonvento. His background in producing videos companies like Ferrari, Audi, Porsche, and Chevrolet made gave him the experience to take on a film like this. The reception so far has been great. Last year this film won “Best Documentary” at the International Motor Film Awards in London. It recently made its North American debut at Mammoth Film Festival.

With the release, today of Rookie Season in theaters, LRM Online‘s Emmanuel Gomez spoke with Adrian Bonvento. One of the biggest topics that we covered is how do you plan a film with events that have not happened yet? In the case of a sports film like this one. Is it just a matter of shooting and them creating the narrative? Or is there already a theme that he wanted to focus on? As you can’t make up drama in a documentary. We also touched upon some of his shooting methods in order to create the visuals that are presented in the film. It’s a fantastic interview that you can check out down below!
Here is the synopsis for Strike Back Studios’ Rookie Season
Cinematic and enthralling, “Rookie Season” forgoes traditional interviews and straps the viewer firmly into the driver’s seat, as it follows the highs and lows of Rebel Rock Racing during their inaugural IMSA season. A deeply moving and introspective account of what it takes to compete, this is a story of struggle and strife; of victories along the way; of defeat. It is a universal underdog tale that attempts to uncover the truth and the meaning behind the pursuit of one’s dream.
Strike Back Studios’ Rookie Season is now playing in theaters. Then will be available on TVOD/Digital Platforms on April 4th, 2022.
