Disclaimer: This post contains potential spoilers for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.

Given that Pokémon was such a huge part of my childhood growing up, it’s no real surprise that I’m at least a little bit excited at the idea of the upcoming Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. However, I don’t think many of us could have predicted that the film actually looked as fun as it did with that recent trailer. Sure, it was still fluffy and fun, but it also managed to cover a child-friendly noir aesthetic that I really dug.

But while the trailer did a great job of giving us a core foundation for the plot, it really didn’t give us any hints as to how deep the rabbit hole went or where it would eventually lead them. Who is the baddie behind these disappearances, and would the revelation actually mean anything to fans? According to a brand-new rumor, the answer is yes.

If you don’t want to be spoiled by the reveal, I wouldn’t read any further.

According to a report from We Got This Covered, a secret villain will be none other than Mewtwo. Old fans will recognize the mysterious Pokémon from the original game as well as the first animated film, where he also played the role of the villain — but a sympathetic one. It looks like that angle may continue here. It’s stated in the report that the film will be his story. So while it looks like he will likely be played up as the villain, he still won’t be THE villain of the movie.

This feels kinda familiar for many fans. I can see him being the catalyst for everything and I can also see Mewtwo on a mission to free Pokémon from the slavery of mankind, but as far as the REAL villain…could it possibly be Giovanni, Team Rocket, or whatever equivalent they come up with in this world? I’d be surprised if they were willing to dive this deep so early on, but I suppose it’s possible.
