It might not name the movie in the title, but if we are talking about Star Wars‘ biggest flop, it can only mean Solo. The Han Solo movie had a lot of trouble during development and the box office numbers were poor. Or at least poor for a movie that cost as much as Solo did. It was, in no vague terms, considered a flop.
Last year, rumor began that Lucasfilm was working on a show, which would act as a sequel to Solo. Not necessarily bringing that team back together, but exploring the criminal side of Qi’ra’s story more, as the rumor went. Now Star Wars Unity (aka Jeremey Conrad of MCU Cosmic), who first ran with that story, has given a small update. The outlet says that a second, separate source, has now confirmed plans are indeed in place to carry on with a story about Crimson Dawn/Black Sun. Not only that, but they also claim that Donald Glover’s Lando could well make an appearance. If the show is a success then plans are in place to off-shoot into a Lando-led show also. One presumes the plan would be to keep Donald Glover around for that one.
Now, the question we have to ask is, whether this is a smart idea or not? For a start, fans really didn’t want Solo, to begin with, At least, that’s the general feedback I heard before release. Post-release, added with the non-existent profits, it seems like fans just didn’t take to Solo at all. Fans tell me they didn’t want to see a young Han Solo, and they certainly didn’t want to see every aspect of his history crammed into one movie.

Pre-release saw some buzz around what Donald Glover’s version of Lando would be like. However, post-release most fans were saying he was underused in the movie. They (generally) also did not like the hinted romantic connections between Lando and his droid. I have heard some fans very recently point to the scene where Lando breaks down over L3’s death, as one of the worst in all Star Wars. I’m not sure I would go that far, but it didn’t work for me either. When you consider how many times Threepio has been blown to pieces and put back together over the years, it does make you wonder what the fuss was about?
So is making a Solo continuation a good idea for Lucasfilm? I’ll go with yes, surprisingly, given the preamble above. For a start, TV is not cinema, so having content there, will still drive subscriptions. Maybe there an argument to be made that poor quality content is better than no content on streaming platforms? I always felt like a sequel to Solo could have been far more interesting than the movie we got, however, so I am not saying this will suck. I like the idea of Qi’ra and Han becoming part of the underworld in different ways from one another. Also, I think if the show actually focusses on the criminal underworld side more, as rumors suggest, then the focus isn’t squarely on Han Solo. Could it instead star Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra in the lead role?
If fans think this is a bad idea, then likely nothing I can say will change your mind. Instead, picture yourself hearing that Lucasfilm was making a new show, about the Black Sun and Crimson Dawn criminal empires. It doesn’t sound like a bad idea at all really? If Lando shows up once or twice, then see how audiences react, before planning a spinoff show? Though, whether a Lando centric show would work I just don’t know? I do, however, think a show which follows Qi’ra’s path certainly could. Of course, it depends on the talent, the story, and execution and all those other annoying little details. As always take this with a pinch of salt until we hear something more official.
So would you as a fan want to see a show about the criminal underworld of Star Wars, or would you actually want to see the cast of Solo all return? Leave your thoughts below with the other nerf herders.
