Sharlto Copley hit it big by playing with aliens in Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 in 2009. So, it is no surprise that Copley’s directorial debut will also include aliens.
Deadline reports that Sharlto Copley is set to direct the comedy Sapien Safari, with QC Entertainment financing the film. Copley will star in the film as well.
Copley also wrote the script for Sapien Safari, described as a social comedy that focuses on alien naturalist Riblik, a sort of Steve Irwin of the galaxy, who faces an uphill battle to convince the new owner of Earth that its dominant wildlife species is worth protecting.
In case you haven’t seen District 9, you’ve surely seen Copley in The A-Team, Elysium, Maleficent, the US remake of Oldboy, Free Fire, and Hardcore Henry. Next he will appear in Gringo alongside David Oyelowo, Charlize Theron, and Joel Edgerton, in March.
Copley had the following comment on being backed by QC Entertainment:
“In an increasingly risk-averse environment, the team at QC have been an enormous blessing. They have an eye for bold, edgy and original material with commercial potential. Once on board, they wholeheartedly back the filmmaker. One can’t ask for more.”
