Shawn Levy says there’s no legacy characters in Star Wars: Starfighter, plus some more from the latest director in the franchise. Speaking initially on a podcast by The Playlist, Levy explains that Lucasfilm encouraged him to do something completely new without having to worry about what other characters might be doing.
“Every time I’ve asked, ‘Should I use this character that was maybe in that movie?’ Every time it’s, ‘You know what? People have seen that. Do something new.’”
“There is no mandate or interference other than the constant encouragement, ‘Make this new.’ And that’s the truth.”
“Unlike ‘Solo’… unlike ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ which was a sequel to two other movies and ultimately a ninth film in the Skywalker saga, ‘Starfighter’ is all new characters based on new ideas that Jonathan and I cooked up alone and together.”

Meanwhile, Levy also spoke to Vanity Fair about how things are going on Starfighter. You can check the link for everything Levy had to say, but speaking about how we was offered the project;
“I knew the feeling that she wanted. I know the aspects of my work that have worked and that she was alluding to. It is sort of a combination of humor and heart, within adventure. The first step was, I chose [screenwriter] Jonathan Tropper, with whom I’ve done small movies and big movies. We just started talking, and it led to months of dreaming and brainstorming and rejecting ideas and embracing others. And little by little, it led us to a theme that was really interesting to me and some characters that were interesting to me. I can’t give anything more than that away.”
So, what do you think as Shawn Levy says there’s no legacy characters in Star Wars: Starfighter? Were Lucasfilm right to mandate new to Levy? Thoughts below.
