When video games cross the ocean, things can get a little confusing. Especially in the ‘90s. I don’t know about you guys, but while I was growing up, we called Doctor Robotnik…Doctor Robotnik. Well, apparently, overseas in Japan, he was called Doctor Eggman — a reference to the egg-like shape of his body.
In the 2000s, that name, Doctor Eggman, finally made it overseas. But, apparently, that wasn’t the end of the story. As it turns out, his name is actually Doctor Robotnik, with his nickname being Eggman. With the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog film, we’re getting Doctor Robotnik as his name, but a new clip reveals a nod to the nickname.

In the clip, we see Sonic and his friends cornered by Robotnik and his egg-like drones. Thanks to that, Sonic calls him Mr. Eggman, which I think is quite the nice nod to fans of the game. Whether or not that “Eggman” moniker will continue on in sequels — assuming there are any — will remain to be seen.
As a side note, I do think Sonic’s CG does look a little rough — as if they aren’t quite finished yet. I hope they’re able to give them an extra polish before the movie’s done, but it’s probably unlikely. Also, Sonic kills his friends in the clip, so that’s cool.
