Sonic: Jim Carrey Gets Deep About Doctor Robotnik

While many of us may recognize Jim Carrey from his goofy antics on films like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Liar Liar, and The Mask, we can’t forget that he’s also spent a lot of time in critical darlings like The Majestic, The Truman Show, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Yes, his comedic stylings may be a staple of the ‘90s, but behind that visage is a true artist who has expressed himself in countless ways over the decades.

This year will see him return to the fold in a decidedly goofy-looking role of Doctor Robotnik. That’s right, in Sonic the Hedgehog, he will be playing the big bad that has plagued the Blue Blur’s life for years. But is the character just a wacky and goofy character?

When asked about the character’s relationship with Sonic in a recent interview, Carrey pulled out this gem of a statement.

“Sonic is the innocence [Robotnik] can no longer connect with. He wants to own it but he can never be it.”

And somehow, I now understand the character more after that statement than I ever did over the decades of game I’ve played. Over the course of two sentences, the relationship between those two have become clear. Robotnik yearns for an innocence that Sonic has, and in thinks the only way he can have it if he controls it. However, in trying to achieve that control, he only takes himself further away from the goal of innoncence.

That’s some deep s**t. But will it come across in the performance? I certainly hope so.
