Spider-Man: Brand New Day Director Talks Tonal Shift And Praises Tom Holland’s Performance

Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton talks tonal shifts and praises star Tom Holland’s performance in the sequel. Cretton is a producer on Wonder Man and as such has been promoting the series, which just dropped on Disney+. I’ll be watching the full series across the next couple of days and I’ll have a review by Monday.

However, in two separate interviews, Cretton has been asked about his impending Spider-Man: Brand New Day sequel. The film has wrapped and Cretton is currently supervising the post-production and editing process as directors do. The film will be with us this July 31, so Cretton is being careful what he says.

In the video below, Cretton has a few words on Brand New Day. Read on for transcript.

“In a similar way to how we approached this, Simon Williams and Wonder Man, I was really excited about the way Kevin, Amy, Tom Rothman and Tom Holland, and all the creatives that were involved when I came on board, wanted to do something that felt different. Of course, it’s still the Spider-Man that everybody loves, but this is a new chapter in his life and that tonal shift was something that was exciting to me and felt really different and it was an extremely gratifying experience.”

In the second video below, Cretton has praise for the movie’s lead star Tom Holland.

“I am really excited for everybody to see Tom Holland in this movie because he killed it. His performance is incredible. He went to places that I think people and fans and just anybody who watches the movie, I think, will feel very connected to the emotions that we’re exploring.”

Now Peter is an adult, could we expect a slightly more mature themed Spider-Man film? We do have a seemingly street level tale, and the likes of Punisher and Hulk. The first three films were Peter in High School, and tonally they matched that. Therefore, it seems logical the tonal shift Cretton talks about would be the other way i.e. darker, more mature themes.

Well, at least we don’t have very long to wait to find out. What do you think of potential tonal shifts and praise for Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Brand New Day? Is it shaping up to be a movie you are excited to see?
