Many of Marvel’s stories have had overtones of tolerance. Perhaps the easiest comparison to make has to do with the X-Men. Many of the events in those stories felt like direct parallels to events going on during the Civil Rights Movement, and the stories have always fell to the side of tolerance over hatred.
This is why it’s no surprise that Marvel icon Stan Lee took to Marvel’s official YouTube channel to preach tolerance.
Here’s some of what he had to say:
“Marvel has always been, and always will be, a reflection of the world right outside our window. That world may change and evolve, but the one thing that will never change is the way we tell our stories of heroism. Those stories have room for everyone, regardless of their race, gender, religion or color of their skin.”
“The only things we don’t have room for are hatred, intolerance and bigotry. That man next to you — he’s your brother. That woman over there — she’s your sister. And that kid walking by — hey, who knows, he may have the proportionate strength of a spider! We’re all part of one big family — the human family — and we all come together in the body of Marvel.”
There was no context for the video, but given the current political and racial climate, as well as the recent shooting in Vegas, it’s a message that’s great to hear.
