Star Wars: Daisy Ridley Talks About Rey’s Legacy In The Rise Of Skywalker

In a recent interview, Daisy Ridley says she's ready for a Rey return in the upcoming Star Wars sequel currently in development.

**Warning up front, that some may find Daisy Ridley’s comments here a little too revealing depending on interpretation, so be aware of this with almost a week to go till release.**

Who is Rey, is she a Skywalker? That seems very unlikely at this point, as Luke would know if he had a child and clearly she isn’t Leia’s, so is she just a random nobody who has a serious affinity with the Force, maybe even on par with that of Anakin Skywalker? Is she connected to some other Star Wars lineage, like Kenobi, Palpatine or Bib Fortuna’s secret love child with Ashoka Tano? That remains to be seen, but it does make me wonder what the title of this next movie means, The Rise of Skywalker.

Is the Skywalker referred to Ben Solo, will a redemption of some sort be the key to saving the Galaxy, or could there be another possibility? Could Rey decide she is a Skywalker, having no other family name and adopt that moniker going forward? That’s something we discussed here at LRM when the title was first announced, and we had virtually no clue as to where The Rise of Skywalker would be going narratively. Maybe there is something in that after all as Daisy Ridley was quoted from the recent appearance at CCXP19. Check out the social media post from Luiz Fernando who was present.

To specifically say that her legacy, or Rey’s legacy will be that anyone can choose their own families is interesting. It might not mean Skywalker as such, perhaps just the idea that Rey seems to have a hole that she feels a family would fill, and perhaps she simply realizes that her friends have become her family. My only concern with this, is that out of all the other lead characters, Rey really only has a relationship with Leia, Chewy and Finn, Leia least of those. Though with Leia actually training Rey in this movie, perhaps that is about to change?

Of course, she could be referring to Skywalker specifically and perhaps ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ will be Rey adopting that name and carrying on the legacy of Skywalker’s defeating Emperor Palpatine? I guess it won’t be long now till we find out, I don’t have any issue with either of these propositions in theory.

Ridley also talked about how tricky yet fun the shoot was when speaking at a recent press event in LA.

“There really wasn’t a day where I was like, ‘Oh, it’s just a quick scene.’ Coming from the last one, which was quite heavy, even the joyous scenes I found very strange to do, It’s just so strange because I’ve gone from a film with a lot of like ‘Please be my friend Luke’ and he’s like, ‘Go away…’ And then very much the stuff with Adam [Driver],” Ridley said, “So coming back was so great. But it would be so easy to just flow into it that you’re like ‘Am I acting? Is this what is required?’ Because I’m basically bouncing off of Oscar [Isaac] and John [Boyega] and Joonas [Suotamo] and Anthony [Daniels], in such a joyous way that you just feel like you’re having a chat with your pals. So it’s not, like, difficult… but it’s strange wondering how that general vibe is going to translate into a scene.”

There are a lot of leaks out there for this movie and I am fully aware of the importance of Ridley’s comments if those leaks are to be believed (which I do), so please keep the leaks talk to a minimum below, as it’s not fair to spoil things for others with just over a week to go. However, please do jump in and let us know what you think?
