The Empire. It’s a thing that’s ingrained in our heads as a bad, horrifying thing. It’s where the bad guys all chill, hang out, and plot evil things, like taking over the galaxy. And yet, they somehow rose up, took over a good chunk of the galaxy, and almost made it impossible for decency to flourish. 

And even after they fell, it didn’t take long for it to rise up once again in the form of the First Order. So, what’s the deal with these guys? What is it that people find so engaging?

“Yeah, I was thinking about it and, not to get all serious and that, but I was interested to know what George Lucas’ version was for his style of conflict,” actor John Boyega told Variety. “For some reason, the people that are fighting for good are living in the mountains somewhere, they don’t have the best machinery, they don’t have the best technology. They’re not in a stable world in which they get to move freely. They’re isolated a lot and they fight for their cause on a day-to-day basis. And then the evil side is big, corporate, clean. [Gives knowing look, laughs] That made me go, huh.”

Boyega continued, “So perhaps people signing on to the First Order is because the First Order has occupied a lot of planets in the universe and people are just growing up in those societies and believe, you know, that’s the society you grew up in, that’s the government you grew up in, that’s the army they give you to protect you, so you’re like, hmm, it is what it is.”

Of course, Finn, as a character, had no choice. He was born into his role as a Stormtrooper, and his only real moment of agency was when he helped Poe escape early on in The Force Awakens, inadvertently paving the way for the new Sequel Trilogy in the process.
