Star Wars: Outlaws Gameplay Trailer And Thoughts

We have a new Star Wars Outlaws Story Trailer to share and it's all about the underworld, plus a release date for when the game arrives.

You’ve already seen the CGI trailer, now it’s time to watch the Star Wars: Outlaws gameplay trailer, and perhaps get my thought on what we’ve just seen? First thing’s first, check out some actual gameplay from Star Wars: Outlaws below. This trailer does warn that what you see, whilst in-game footage, is unfinished and does not necessarily represent the finished quality. 

So what do we have here? It seems like the best way to describe Outlaws is an open world action RPG. Although so far we have not seen too many RPG elements such as build crafting and resource farming etc. However, the rest of what we see does match the formula. Travel to a location, speak to people and receive quest lines. Build up your resources (credits in this case) by completing them and make choices.

There is a key choice in the trailer itself where Kay is able to choose to pay a bribe or not. We see Kay refuse to pay the bribe and as a result she needs to leave the planet quickly and is attacked upon entering orbit. Whilst not something we see, who knows what happens if you choose to pay the bribe? Maybe you just get to leave poor but safely. Or, maybe it could lead to further questlines?

Hype, or no Hype?

As for as, am I impressed or not, it’s a yes and no situation. The beginning of the video shows a stealth/combat section where you can use your pet as a buddy to perform actions you can not. My issue was that the stealth was a tad clunky. Clearly there were guards in eyeshot of Kay after she grabbed onto that container. Also would the other guards not hear someone getting punched to the deck? I’ve seen worse stealth mechanics, so I get it’s not as bad as some. However, even when Kay was discovered I never once felt any excitement during the action scenes. The speeder chase felt too slow, and designed so less skilled players don’t crash.

What did impress me though, was after the action sequences. We see Kay go into a town, walk into a bar and initiate contact with an NPC. We then have Kay decide to leave, get in her ship, take off from port, and transition into space travel. Then the players fights off an attack and space and jumps to hyperspace for another location. 

This is something fans have longed to do since video games began, and now the technology is here to make it feel realistic. In a game like Outlaws you want immersion and this really helps sell that immersion to me, as do the (so far) very decent graphics.

However, I did have one minor grip I’d love to see looked at again. The transition from planet to space wasn’t as good as I had hoped. I get that they wish to make it quick, and we likely need to hide a loading screen. However, moving into clouds which blur the view screen and suddenly clear to show space isn’t quite cutting it for me. I’m not sure what the answer is either, but I can only call it like I see it. The opposite is true for the transition between space/hyperspace/space, that was great and the loading screen is clearly hidden behind the hyperspace graphics. Also, the fact we had to charge the hyperdrive and get into position a little first, all looks brilliant, as frankly did the whole space section. 

Overall, I’m curious by Star Wars: Outlaws gameplay so far rather than hyped. There is potential for a very good game there. But it will depends how fun it is, and how it all works once it is the hands of real players.
