Star Wars: Rumored Details On How They Are Bringing Leia To The Rise Of Skywalker [No Spoilers]

The most tragic aspect of the Star Wars sequel trilogy has surely been the fact that Carrie Fisher sadly passed away after finishing The Last Jedi, when she should have appeared in what is now The Rise of Skywalker. We’ve known for some time that JJ Abrams and his crew are attempting to have the movie feel like Carrie Fisher was really there using old footage from The Force Awakens and whatever VFX McGubbins they utilize to pull this off.

Just how big of a part can they have Leia play in this movie whilst just utilizing some old footage is something that’s always worried me, but I guess they can only do what they can do? The one aspect that always seems like a major stumbling block to me is the writing process. How can Abrams and Chris Terrio write dialogue for Fisher that she never spoke, and still have it feel natural to the story they are writing? It will be some feat if they manage to pull it off and now we have a few more details about how they are handling the Leia problem in the movie. Sources of StarWarsNewsNet have described some of the process to the outlet which they shared, check it out below.

“They are combining clips. There will also be no horrible digi-double that was used for Leia in Rogue One. This is all being done in what we call “comp.” There will be some digital work done (ageing, hair) so her face and body match, but not the uncanny valley like Tarkin in Rogue One. They will be changing her hair or adding wrinkles as she looked very different between TFA and TLJ.”

This all sounds fairly straightforward to me, though the site also says that despite what Carrie’s brother Todd Fisher said, their source had no information about using footage from The Last Jedi as well as The Force Awakens. The outlet also describes a process whereby a body double is used for reference and then Carrie’s real face is digitally placed over that with the appropriate background then brought in for location.

This, for me, still doesn’t answer the question of dialogue and the outlet also wonders about this. As far as their source knows, there are no voice actors being brought in to read Leia’s new lines. Though, it’s possible this is being done in post and may not have even happened yet? Your guess is as good as anyone’s on that front for now, but for me, it is the major stumbling block in this process, that I can’t imagine them passing successfully.

Interestingly, the outlet claims that not only are they using deleted scenes of Leia from The Force Awakens, but they are also using shots that were used in the movie as well. A Reddit user called SirRidley has pointed out how a shot used in the trailer for The Rise of Skywalker has the exact same angles and facial expressions of a shot used in The Force Awakens. You can check that Reddit post Here.

I’m still not convinced this experiment is going to work, but I also don’t see what else they could have done given the tragic circumstances. For all that I dislike The Last Jedi, I am not sure of any place where they could have killed off Leia without it feeling weird. Some fans pointed to the attack on the bridge in which Leia did her Kal’ El impression, but Leia was in so many important scenes after that point it would have had to be rewritten and reshot.

Can JJ Abrams deliver a satisfying conclusion to the Star Wars sequel trilogy and still have Leia feel involved? Let us know your thoughts and concerns in the usual spot down below.
