Stormlight Archive 4 First Draft Complete, Author Chronicles Completion

Art by Michael Whelan.

This probably surprises no one, given how much I write about content, but one of the things I love doing most is following the creative process of filmmakers and storytellers. I do it through podcasters, YouTube videos, or good old-fashioned documentaries. Basically, any opportunity I have to follow someone whose work I admire, I take it, and author Brandon Sanderson is no exception to that.

In fact, as far as authors go, he’s probably one of the best mainstream traditionally-published fantasy authors in terms of keeping his fans in the loop of the process. In fact, his site has full blog updates, progress bars on his current projects, and even more.

If you’ve been following progress on his latest Stormlight Archive book — the fourth in the series — you know that it’s hitting in November of this year. However, in order to hit that date, Sanderson needed to execute a marathon of writing at the very end of last year, which he chronicled extensively on social media.

“All right, folks,” the author wrote. “Today is the day.  I’m going to make a final push to finish Stormlight Four.  I want to have the book done by the new year, so the family is on board for me spending the next ten to twelve hours writing.  I’ll post updates to let you know how it’s going!”

The updates began on December 30, where he shared a writing playlist for his novel, and they came pretty much every hour or two, and they included basic descriptions of how scenes he finished worked into the finished product, structurally. He even shared his writing playlist on Spotify.

These updates ended on December 31, with his “day” clocking in at 19,000 words and the book currently sitting at 424,000 words total, and if you think that’s an inhuman amount of output…it is…but there’s a reason for that.

“If you’re wondering at how fast I’m going, this isn’t normal,” Sanderson wrote. “An average work day for me is 2-3k words.  However, since I already have these parts all figured out in detail, I can move faster than usual.  I’m also finally writing scenes I outlined in 2001, which is invigorating.”

Well, that means the first draft is done, and if we’re to believe his site, he’s also 40% through the second draft, which probably means he did some editing as he went.

Regardless, it looks like the story will be finished in time for this November, which I’m sure will make many fantasy fans happy.
