According to a report from Variety, The Social Network, Moneyball, and Captain Phillips producer Michael De Luca has hopped onto the Warner Bros. and DC Films picture, Suicide Squad 2.

So what does this mean for the film? It seems to indicate Warner Bros.’ desire to let each film stand more on its own. Rather than have a complete overlord in charge of the whole universe, they’re going for a strategy that’s more in keeping with their director-focused brand — having central figures in charge of each individual project. Perhaps it was the success of Wonder Woman — inarguably the most standalone of any DC film apart from Man of Steel — that convinced them that going this route would be in their best interest.
The report went on to confirm that The Accountant’s Gavin O’Connor is set to write and direct, and that leads Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto are expected to return.
Along with Shazam!, Suicide Squad 2 is the other big priority for DC Films to get underway this year. The film is expected to begin production in late 2018, and will likely hit theaters in 2019.
What do you think of DeLuca joining Suicide Squad 2? Is it important that each film going forward be handled more like a standalone property? Let us know your thoughts down below!
