Filmmaker Taika Waititi is developing a new Judge Dredd movie alongside writer Drew Pearce. THR reports that the two have long sought to work on a project together and a new adaptation of 2000AD’s Dredd is that project.

‘Waititi, the Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit filmmaker, is attached to direct a new feature film take on Dredd, the popular and violent British comic book character.’

‘Drew Pearce, the scribe known for his action movie-filled resume thanks to titles such as Fall Guy and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, is attached to write the script.’

We’ve already had two very different adaptations of Judge Dredd on film so far. The frankly mediocre loose adaptation Judge Dredd starring Sly Stallone. However, the Karl Urban starring Dredd, was brilliant. Interestingly, it was being rumored back in April that The Boys showrunners were developing a live-action continuation of Dredd. Is that still happening or not? Or, was it ever even a thing? The source of the rumors was sketchy at best.

Either way it seems unlikely that there will be two competing projects at different studios. After all, here’s what THR said of the new movie.

‘Producers include Dredd rights holders Chris Kingsley, Jason Kingsley and Ben Smith of Rebellion Developments, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, Jeremy Platt, Natalie Viscuso and Pearce.’

I think that tells you that there was no Dredd TV series in the works, or it never got past Go.

As for the big Judge Dredd comic book fans, they mostly loved Dredd. However, they are less keen on the idea of Waititi, who is known for his strange sense of humour. I have always liked Waititi myself, but I accept he’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

The project has yet to find a studio, and until it does it won’t go any further. Someone has to pay for it. A few projects Waititi had been attached to have fallen through. Therefore, I guess we’ll wait and see who, if anyone, picks this up.
