Sorry, Christopher Nolan, but it looks like Tenet is getting delayed again.

Yeah, many of us knew this day would come. It was pretty ambitious of Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. to stick to a July date. Even when they pushed it back a couple of weeks, it still fell squarely within the month of July. I can’t speak for anyone else, but given how early they were hoping to push it, I assumed I wouldn’t be seeing it in theaters. Now, with COVID-19 cases re-emerging across the U.S., I’m happy to hear they’re pushing it back once again.

This news comes courtesy of Variety. According to the outlet, Warner Bros. has pushed the film from July 31 to August 12. It’s only a couple of weeks, but I honestly expected nothing less. It’s clear that Nolan wants it to be one of the first big movies to hit post-COVID, and Warners is doing everything they can to make that happen.

“Warner Bros. is committed to bringing Tenet to audiences in theaters, on the big screen, when exhibitors are ready and public health officials say it’s time,” a Warner Bros. spokesperson said in a statement. “In this moment what we need to be is flexible, and we are not treating this as a traditional movie release. We are choosing to open the movie mid-week to allow audiences to discover the film in their own time, and we plan to play longer, over an extended play period far beyond the norm, to develop a very different yet successful release strategy.”

It’s worth noting that this change came after New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo revealed that movie theaters would not be opening in their next phase of reopening. Obviously, New York is a sizable market, so it only makes sense they’d delay the film. And, in all honesty, I’d be surprised if it doesn’t get delayed again. This is a $200 million film, and Warners needs to do all it can to make a profit.
