The Synopsis
A political thriller set in the murky world of post-war Guatemala, THE ART OF POLITICAL MURDER uncovers the truth behind the brutal murder of Bishop Juan Gerardi, killed days after presenting a damning report implicating Guatemala’s military in the atrocities of the Civil War. A team of brave, young investigators – assembled by the Church – unearth a web of conspiracy and murder, but as they edge closer to the truth, will the country’s criminal underbelly succeed in silencing them?

Francisco Goldman is the writer of the Award-Winning book The Art of Political Murder. In addition, he is a novelist and journalist. He has dedicated over 18 years investigating the death of Bishop Gerardi. Goldman is the author of The Long of Night of White Chickens, The Ordinary Seaman and The Divine Husband: A Novel. He’s had many publications in The New Yorker, Harper’s The New York Times, The Believer to name a few.

The Art Of Political Murder is Paul Taylor’s second documentary. In 2006 he directed We Are Together (Thina Simunye) and won several awards, including International Documentary Association Award and a Grierson Award. In between he has produced several documentaries like Rough Aunties and The Interrupters among others.
I had the opportunity to discuss The Art of Political Murder with the Paul Taylor and Francisco Goldman via Zoom. They talked about the importance of this story and the admiration for everyone involved in the investigation from day one. Goldman expressed his experience witnessing the trial. Taylor discussed what attracted him to this story.
