It’s no secret parenting may be one of the toughest tasks as portrayed in the new The Compatriots movie. Some can be over protective and more when knowing they can be at risk losing them due to life circumstances and can get lost doing so not realizing they are also limiting self growth.
The Synopsis
A nuanced portrayal of immigration, friendship, and LGBTQIA+ experiences, THE COMPATRIOTS follows Javi (Rafael Silva, “Don’t Look Up”), an undocumented immigrant facing deportation, who unexpectedly reunites with his estranged best friend Hunter (Denis Shepherd, “Paradise Lost”), a vivacious bachelor seeking deeper connections. Together, they embark on a heartfelt journey to prevent Javi’s expulsion from the only country he has ever called home. THE COMPATRIOTS offers audiences an intimate look at the personal struggles faced by undocumented immigrants, particularly those who arrived as children and face deportation to countries they don’t remember, and was inspired by Cohen’s best friend Alberto Sayan, a Dreamer from Peru whom Cohen met during middle school in Natick, MA.
In The Compatriots we get to witness a father named “Alejandro” (Alfredo Huerca, “Cadena Perpetua”) trying to protect his son “Javi” played by Rafael Silva. To the point of not realizing it is encouraging suppression. In the clip below we get to see a little bit of it while finally “Javi” reaching a point of no more of it.
THE COMPATRIOTS will be available on Apple/iTunes, Amazon and all major platforms in the US and Canada on September 16th, 2025 A day before Citizen Day in the United States (September 17th) and highlights the continuing relevance and resonance of stories about immigration, identity, and belonging in American cinema.
