The DC FanDome Wonder Woman 1984 Trailer Was Disappointing AF | COME @ ME, BRO!

I hate the latest trailer for Wonder Woman 1984! Look, I never intended to be anti-DC in this column. I assure you I won’t be writing about DC every week.  As much as I loved the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984, the latest trailer for released at DC Fandome, was pretty, pretty, pretty disappointing.

The concept of my column, Come @ Me, Bro, is to present a strong, unpopular opinion that I actually believe. All the opinions are not made up just to incite angry discord. Unlike Twitter users who tweet an unpopular opinion only to say, “Don’t @ Me,” I actually want to hear from you! Whether you agree, or more likely, disagree with my statements. This week; why the most recent trailer for WW84 was garbage, compared to the eight-month-old previous trailer for the film.

DC FanDome offered a lot to like, especially the spectacular first trailer for The Batman. I’m not just here to convince you the DC FanDome trailer was disappointing, so I need to start at why the previous WW84 trailer was fantastic.

The First WW84 Trailer Was Amazing!

Just to remind you of all it’s glory, above is the eight-month-old “Wonder Woman 1984 – Official Trailer” from way before the world fell into Covid -19 chaos, when it had the release date of June 6, 2020.

The trailer went with a fun ’80s aesthetic that fits the time period, and would make Marvel Studios green with envy. Honestly, maybe that’s something you did not enjoy, as we’ve seen it before in the trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy and even more so in Thor: Ragnarok. Maybe you tire of ’80s nostalgia in an era of TV and film where it has been beaten to death with popular projects like Stranger Things. I’m not. Between the flashy logo, the killer remix of Sebastian Bohm’s “Blue Monday,”and literally being set in the year 1984, this type of ’80s goodness is what made the previous trailer so exciting.

But Wait, There’s More!

That ’80s feeling is obviously not the only thing that made the previous WW84 trailer great. I enjoyed most the characters more in the first trailer, from Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) to Diana herself (Gal Gadot). We know Maxwell Lord, as well as Kirsten Wigg as Cheetah, are the villains in WW84. In the first trailer, Lord was an interesting character, spouting lines about being able to give anyone anything they wanted. A schemer. If anything, I felt he was a throwback to Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor from the Superman of old. He also reminded me of a current political figure we all know, hinted at in his look and aspirations.

We also got to see a bunch of new movies from Wonder Woman, including the tiara throw to knock out the cameras during an action scene set in a mall. We watched her ride a lightning storm in awe. I recognized a more humanizing version of Kirsten Wiig, pre-Cheetah transformation, with a bit of an envious side. Chris Pine, while still funny in the DC Fandome trailer, had goofier lines and was more clearly painted as the character out of time, a sharp and funny contrast to Diana in the first Wonder Woman film.

The action was cool, matching the trailer’s “Blue Monday” soundtrack. Flipping a car, hell yeah! I want to go to there…

But this past weekend, everything changed and I am far less optimistic about WW84.

And Now, This…

I do not like the latest WW84 trailer, which should be obvious by this point. All too obvious.

I found it less flashy, less fun, with the more typical superhero trailer tropes.

For me, Kirsten Wiig, though seeing her farther along the path of a villain, came across more as Electro from the not-so-Amazing Spider-Man 2. I saw Maxwell Lord simplified into the typical voice on the TV threatening the world with a cheesy villain monologue. The more I saw of the action, especially the chase scene in the desert, the less I liked it. Worst of all, was this line when Wonder Woman sees Kirsten Wiig in full Cheetah mode:

Barbara, what did you do?

This line was the deal-breaker for me, though’m not saying I won’t see WW84. I immediately  recognized this is almost exactly what Spider-Man said to Eddie Brock in Spider-Man 3, when he first saw Eddie as Venom. In fact, we have a movie about a jealous co-worker, who seeks power to destroy someone who they are jealous of, after learning they have superpowers. This villain basically becomes mad and will do anything to stop their new rival. Hmmm…

Finally, I think Cheetah looks awful in her final form. Reminds me of a beloved film from 2019 with a bunch of CGI cat people. Darn, I forgot the name of that one. But I’m told it’s a modern classic.

It’s not a worthless trailer. I was just disappointed based on what we were initially shown eight months ago.

COME @ ME, BRO!
