Last week we saw Iris and Nora make amends. Will this last for them moving forward? Also, the team looks to find Caitlin’s father. What role will his emergence play? Read on to find out!
Cicada Returns — Oz starts the show fighting T-1000. Sorry, let me start over. Cicada begins the episode at Jitters where he is tailing another meta which leads to a fight in the parking lot. Cicada uses his meta Flash symbol to kill the meta followed with a corny line, of course. Cicada heads to the hospital and speaks to his nurse with a Christian Bale Batman voice equipped with scowls. He ends the episode with a good deal of grunting as well.
Cicada is constantly in bad shape, barely being able to walk, yet when he wears the mask he seems fine. Why doesn’t he just wear the mask all the time, Bane-style?
Separate Missions — The team comes together to find an abundance of meta shrapnel around the city in order to find where Cicada might be. Since part of the team is going on the hunt, the rest seemingly have nothing else to do and can continue the search for Caitlin’s father. We aren’t even 10 minutes in and the episode is already a bit choppy. I still feel that The Flash is struggling from what Arrow struggled with a couple season ago which is character balance. In the process of trying to share screen time, it actually disrupts the balance and flow of the plot.
Daddy Issues — Barry, Cisco, and Caitlin all breach to her father’s lab and don’t have to search for too long until they find him. How does he know Caitlin and her friends? Well, he kept tabs on them through other scientists. I did like the name drop of Harrison Wells and Victor Fries. Caitlin’s father was locked into his current lab by his former wife (yikes). A quick breach and they brought Caitlin’s father to STAR Labs. Once again a quick resolution.
Caitlin’s dad looks to have similar powers as Caitlin. Could this be why her mother locked him away and distanced herself from her daughter? Mr. Snow tried to cure his ALS which is what gave him his powers. Caitlin had the same genetic code, which is why he tried to cure her as well, giving her powers. Caitlin received the powers, but her father’s current state is leading to his demise.
Cisco thinks Caitlin’s father is not quite what he seems since he found skin graphs back at the lab. This is a hybrid Mr. Freeze storyline. Someone has a debilitating disease (Nora Fries) and a scientist goes to lengths to find a cure leading in his own issues (Mr. Freeze). They are trying to figure out who the alter-ego is…Caitlin’s father, or the frozen individual. Her dad wants to suppress his human form. He breathes some freeze breath on them (which looked like 1990s Power Rangers acting) which took them all by surprise. Isn’t Barry the fastest man alive? Why is his reaction time so slow this season, yet last season he was moving faster than the human eye?
As smart as everyone is, they all go into subzero temperatures to get Icicle which they clearly start to freeze. How would they not know this? They are all geniuses, yet they run into a room that is in the -300 degrees…I’m pretty sure an individual with no education at all would know not to do that…
Anyways, all of this for the return of Killer Frost, which has always been deep within Caitlin. Icicle escapes…of course.
So Many Story Lines — In yet another storyline, Nora and Iris try and go on a mission finding the shrapnel with Wells. This was mainly Wells singing while trying to expand Iris and Nora’s relationship. (It should be noted that my wife was watching The Flash with me and said, “Who are all these people?”) This supports that more characters aren’t always better. Now Iris is taking the role of former Season 1 Wells and is teaching Nora about her speed. I’m not quite sure how seeing as she had speed for one day. Shouldn’t Barry be teaching her? Meanwhile, he has barely been in the episode.
Forced Comedy — Cecile and Ralph were used as the comic relief, which came across as forced.
The Flash was in the episode for a total of five minutes, and it showed. This was not a strong episode. Too much was going on, with too many plot holes. Arrow is succeeding with minimally using the Green Arrow, but The Flash is not following suit. There are currently too many characters and too many storylines that are not cohesive at the moment. Tonight’s episode reminded me of a Batman 66′ episode. What did you think of this week’s episode? Leave your thoughts in the usual spot, and thanks for reading!
The Flash returns next Tuesday at 8 p.m. on The CW.
