Just what is going on with Ahsoka and the Rebels sequel? Our friends over at KRT ran a live-stream on their YouTube channel yesterday where they discussed this question. Remember that KRT had revealed that an animated Rebels sequel was almost completed and ready to go. Yet, there has been no hint of this animated show appearing. So what happened?
Well Corey and Noah have an answer of sorts, though not everything is known. KRT says that an animated Rebels sequel was being worked on, until the success of The Mandalorian. According to KRT John Favreau convinced Dave Filoni to switch the Rebels animated sequel to live-action. Now, this was my own guess at what might have happened, though initially that was just a guess. Apparently some of the story in that animated sequel will be transplanted into the upcoming Ahsoka series. KRT also say that Sabine Wren is expected to be a regular main character on that Ahsoka show.
Now, when it comes to an animated Rebels sequel there is hope yet. The guys think there is still a chance that Filoni may decide to end Ahsoka’s story in an animated show. However, there is no guarantee that will be the case. Corey has a feeling that won’t actually happen once the live-action stories progress. I’m not sure either way on that one, however my own preference would be live-action, but that’s just me.

As for Rex, the guys think that Temuera Morrison did some costume tests as Rex, which is why they thought he was coming to The Mandalorian. Interestingly, we know this did happen for Ewan McGregor also, and considering Morrison played Fett in The Mandalorian, it’s not a huge stretch. So yes, the guys still think Rex will show up in Ahsoka. The plot of Ahsoka will be around Ahsoka and Sabine’s search for Ezra and Thrawn, which could lead to an Ezra/Thrawn show further down the line (we heard this also and were first to report this was being developed).
The story of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, Rangers of the New Republic, and first off The Book of Boba Fett will run into the mid ’20’s. KRT also says that this could result in feature films further down the line, which Favreau has already kinda hinted at.
Now, whilst we did not have all the specifics mentioned here, what I will say is that we back up KRT on this one, from what LRM has heard from our own source. I believe this information is as accurate as can be right now. Plans can change though and outside of what Lucasfilm has already announced they can choose different paths. For now though, it seems like KRT‘s information seems the best guide to where things are going in the Mando Verse.
