Oh, The Goonies. How many of us wished as kids that we could go on an adventure like the one chronicled in that film? I can’t tell you how many times I wished I could search for a lost treasure. I also just remembered that part of me believed Data was a cyborg, and realize completely how utterly bonkers that is — but I wanted all of his special gadgets for myself. A boxing glove popping out of my utility belt? Yes, please.
Like many kids, a part of me also wished we would have gotten a sequel. Of course, that was before I really understood how special that movie was. There have been countless movies influenced by The Goonies since, but never an actual sequel. Like many, I now deem the very idea a no-win situation. Given the weight that original film has in our childhood, nothing could live up to the expectation, no matter how good.
But that hasn’t stopped Adam Goldberg from trying. In fact, it’s been a pet project of his for nearly 10 years now. The Goldbergs creator shared his enthusiasm last April when Josh Gad’s YouTube series Reunited Apart featured the cast of The Goonies.
“I rival @joshgad as ultimate fan of #TheGoonies,” Goldberg wrote. “For the last 9 years I’ve been secretly writing PART 2 for fun. It’s my masterpiece. I even had a big meeting scheduled with Richard Donner… canceled ’cause of the lockdown! THE GOONIES 2 WILL happen when life resumes. Promise!!!”

In the tweet, he shared an image of pitch to the one and only Richard Donner. According to Goldberg in an anniversary video, he originally pitched a version to Donner back in 2005, but Donner wasn’t convinced it could top the original. After taking years off the project, inspiration struck in 2013. He’s since written a treatment and script for the property.
But that’s not all, he also developed a piece of concept art that features a group of characters approaching a giant skull with Spanish text engraved on its head.

The text translates to “One mistake shall rain down fear / Feel the wrath of the Devil’s Tears.” It certainly looks like it could fit right at home alongside the original in terms of its spectacle. What do you think of the new piece of concept art? Do you think it shows off a fitting scene for a potential Goonies sequel? Let us know your thoughts down below!
