Steven Speilberg On Why A Goonies Sequel Never Happened

Most every kid who grew up in the 80s and watched The Goonies had dreams of finding an old treasure map and going on the adventure of a lifetime with their friends. Of course, that didn’t happen, at least not for me, however, I still hold the film as a favorite and a prime example of a quintessential 80s film.

Executive producer on the film, The Beard himself, legendary director Steven Spielberg, recently appeared at the end of the cast reunion event organized by actor Josh Gad. Spielberg appeared as a special guest and gave fans a reason why we haven’t been treated to a sequel. You can check out what he said at the event below.

“[We] have had a lot of conversations about it, and every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water. The problem is the bar that [the cast and filmmakers] raised on this genre. I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than the Goonies that we all made in the ’80s. And so until we do people are just going to have to look at this 100 times.”

I loved the film as a kid and still do. It was in some ways an Indiana Jones type adventure, for kids, which was awesome.

Until the day we get a reboot or a sequel we can check out the upcoming Fox series that will have the characters on the show filming a shot-for-shot remake of The Goonies. I’m not sure about this series, but I will certainly give it a shot when the time comes.
