Earlier this month, HBO threw a glitzy little shin-dig for The Penguin, an FYC event at the Paramount Theater in Los Angeles. All the major people rolled deep. You had EP and showrunner Lauren LeFranc, VFX boss Johnny Han, prosthetics maestro Mike Marino, directors Craig Zobel and Helen Shaver, production designer Kalina Ivanov, and cinematographer Jonathan Freeman, all taking the stage to talk shop. It was like the Justice League of grimdark production values.
Then they screened the season finale. That’s right, they showed it to the attendees right there. No spoilers spared. And when the credits rolled, bam, one last panel dropped with the cast: LeFranc, Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, and EP Dylan Clark. The full Penguin flock, chatting it up like Gotham hadn’t just punched us all in the face emotionally. Now, here’s the thing. I watched almost all of Season 1. I said “almost” because I hit the brakes hard when I saw some finale spoilers floating around. Why? Because like a true nerd, I had spent weeks reading forums and watching YouTube breakdowns absolutely convinced that my boy Vick was gonna be revealed as Mr. Zsasz. The internet had me in a chokehold.
SPOILERS AHEAD – And then came the leaks. The finale dropped, and I found out what actually happens to Vick. I wasn’t ready. I’m still not ready. That man drove for Oz. He bled for Oz. He was the most loyal Gotham goon since that guy who followed Bane into the sewer with no mask on. And you’re telling me he dies? No. Absolutely not. I refused to watch it. This is not how a booger like me processes loss.

Honestly, the writing on The Penguin was so damn good, it broke me. I couldn’t finish the show.
