According to The Hollywood Reporter, the longest running prime time scripted series in U.S. television history, The Simpsons, will be joining Disney+ when it launches. This will include the series’ first 30 seasons, which is 660- plus episodes. The massive library of episodes will account for almost ten percent of the 7,500 television episodes that Disney+ is planning to have available when it launches in November. This will be The Simpsons exclusive SVOD home.
As we know, the 20th Century Fox Television produced series, became part of Disney when they bought their entertainment assets for $71.3 billion. As for their new episodes, the Fox broadcast network will keep airing them through at least the 32nd season in 2020-2021. It currently airs on FXX, which made a record deal in 2013 to get the rights to the series. But with the 21 Century Fox deal, FXX and FX Networks also became property of Disney.
It was thought that Disney might sell the library as it could have brought them millions if not billions of dollars to their bottom line. But this move backs up their plan to keep all their content in house. Something that we first saw when Marvel started to remove their content from Netflix. Along with The Simpsons, Disney+ will also had Malcom in the Middle in its first year.
