While Game of Thrones may have ended with a whimper for many fans, there is still no denying the impact it has had on television and pop culture. Not only did it draw in non-fantasy lovers through its copious amounts of sex and political intrigue, but it proved that the genre had a future in TV, and that it was worth laying down the cash to make them look as good as possible.
Now, every other network out there seems to have their eyes focused on getting the next big fantasy property out there, and the next show set to make the first attempt is none other than Netflix’s The Witcher, which is based on the novel series of the same name by Andrzej Sapkowski. In a recent interview with Redanian Intelligence, Showrunner of the series, Lauren S. Hissrich, celebrated the bright future of the genre.

“For years, the fantasy genre was the prerogative of the great film productions. Only they had the budgets for famous actors, for shooting stunning action scenes, for having Oscar-winning costumes. Today the fantasy has found a new home in streaming and on TV, so that the public can see those actors, those costumes and those scenes in their homes. The Witcher does all this with a lot of monsters and magic, and it is very original. The other reason for the luck of fantasy on TV is that the public today is wider than before. Fantasy is no longer just for nerds: just think about the great success of Game of Thrones.”
And speaking of Game of Thrones, is it possible that this show can replicate the success? According to the outlet, Sapkowski said something along the lines of “he is certain that The Witcher will succeed in replicating the success of the highly-acclaimed HBO series, if not surpass it.”
Can’t say the man doesn’t have ambition!
