I have written about my feelings on Hollywood remakes, reboots, and reimaginings. I know there’s not a lot of prefixes to use but does anyone else get tired of using ‘re-‘ so much? Anyways, it’s not uncommon for foreign studios to take American movies and put their own spin on them, but I never thought someone would take a film like Forrest Gump and reimagining it. yes, this is happening…
Bollywood, the Indian version of Hollywood, is casting Aamir Khan (3 idiots, Dangal, Earth) to play the leading role in the reimagining which will be called Lal Singh Chaddha. His biggest hit was Dangal which became the highest worldwide grossing film for India with more than $300 million.
Kahn had this to say regarding the role:
“I have always loved “Forrest Gump” as a script. It is a wonderful story about this character. It is a life-affirming story. It is a feel good film. It is a film for the whole family.”
To be fair, I am a HUGE Tom Hanks fan. I could watch him sit in a chair for two hours and enjoy almost every minute of it. I have also seen my fair share of Bollywood films. I enjoy expanding my entertainment horizons and have no issues with subtitles, but I don’t see how Forrest Gump can really translate well into a Bollywood film. there are too many American specifics that I am not sure translate to the experiences of Indians. I could be wrong though.
The movie is set to begin principal photography in October of this year and be released in 2020.
