Well, it’s finally here after many delays and under the impending takeover of Fox by Disney. Dark Phoenix I would guess will be the last we will ever see in theaters of this iteration of the X-Men franchise. The Fox/ Disney deal is expected to finalise sometime in the next month and after that it is expected X-Men will be rebooted for the MCU. It also seems increasingly likely that New Mutants will never see a movie theatre.
So what do we think of this trailer? My first thought is that there appear to be a lot of similarities between this movie and X-Men: The Last stand, which is to be expected considering Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg wrote that movie. The story is also essentially the same, with Jean discovering her darker and more powerful side to become the Phoenix.

In The Last Stand there was a scene where Jean unable to control her powers destroyed Charles Xavier, in this movie it looks like Raven/Mystique gets killed off by Jean. Oh, nice way to spoil that in the trailer by the way Fox! If nothing else I can take some comfort in the fact the movie won’t be a Jennifer Lawrence vehicle for once?
The movie does look better overall than X-Men: The Last Stand, but then, how hard really would it be to retell that story in a better way? My issue is that it feels like this is someone who worked on The Last Stand remaking the movie in his own way as if to prove that he can actually pull off a successful Dark Phoenix movie. Which, might well be exactly what this is.
How engaged audiences are going to be with a movie series they know has ended remains to be seen, perhaps Dark Phoenix will act as a fitting final chapter for this franchise. I guess I can only speak for myself when I say that the only movie from this franchise I feel is worthy to be watched more than once was Michael Vaughn’s First Class. Any of the films that involved Bryan Singer just don’t do it for me, and I am one fan that’s happy to see this universe given the heave-ho in favour of bringing the characters into the MCU.
